Post-tax season insights (and what you can do about them)
Written by Kateryna Khalandach on April 30, 2024

Congrats! Tax season is over (until it starts again!)

As is tradition, accountants take some time off and, once back in the office, run the “what have we learned” meeting with the team.

 1. Take a break and do something fun

The first thing you should do after tax season is to take a break and do something fun! Whether it's a weekend getaway, a spa day, or just sleeping in, take some time to recharge your batteries and do something that makes you happy. You've earned it! Remember, self-care is essential, and it's crucial to take care of yourself before taking care of others.

2. Hold an After-Action Review

Revisiting the just-completed tax season may be the last thing you feel like doing after you’ve crossed the finish line. But it’s the best time to identify those areas for improvement that will set you up for success—and a less busy tax season—next year. It’s a chance for you and your team to talk openly and honestly about:

- What worked
- What didn’t work
- Why it worked/didn’t work
- What you would do differently next time

For example, you might conclude that the tax and accounting software you implemented last year worked well. But maybe your process for collecting client documents didn’t work because clients were emailing you W-2s and payroll reports, putting sensitive data at risk.

3. Update Processes and Technology

Summer is an ideal time to focus on improving processes and incorporating new technologies identified during the after-tax season review. Technology can significantly enhance efficiency, but it’s essential to have the right processes to complement it. This proactive approach ensures that technology maximizes its benefits during the next tax season for accountants. Investing in training your team on these platforms to maximize efficiency.

4. Work on Professional Development

Outside of tax season is also a great time to get continuing education (CE) hours in and work on developing new skills or deepening your existing skillset. Those who take the time to develop other skills and abilities that assist them in their careers are more likely to excel.

5. Improve Your Client Experience

5.1. Don't Be the Once-a-Year Accountant
Consistently engage with your clients throughout the year to demonstrate ongoing value beyond just tax season. Being responsive and proactive builds trust and loyalty.

5.2. Find Ways to Build Value
Utilize client surveys to identify strengths and weaknesses, and automate communication to provide a steady stream of useful information.

5.3. Ask for Your Clients’ Feedback
Reach out to your clients for feedback via surveys or phone calls to understand their needs and improve your services.

5.4. Keep Clients Informed and Updated
Maintain visibility with clients by keeping them informed about relevant developments and inviting them to events to build stronger relationships.

5.5. Address Client Data Challenges
Engage with clients early to streamline data collection processes and consider automation to reduce manual tasks and improve client relationships.

6. Staff Training and Development

Invest in continuous professional development and training for your team to ensure they are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills. Review staffing planning and capacity management to optimize efficiency and employee well-being.
